Polyphthalamide 50% glass fibre filled (PPA) - Granule - Material Information

Polyphthalamide (PPA) reinforced with 50% glass fiber is a high-performance polyamide engineered for demanding thermal and mechanical environments. This advanced polymer exhibits superior rigidity, low moisture absorption, and exceptional dimensional stability, making it an ideal choice for applications requiring heat resistance and long-term structural performance.

Material Overview

PPA belongs to the family of semi-aromatic polyamides, combining aromatic ring structures with amide linkages to achieve enhanced stiffness and thermal resistance. The addition of 50% glass fibers increases tensile strength, modulus, and creep resistance while maintaining good impact performance. The composite typically achieves tensile strengths above 200 MPa and heat deflection temperatures exceeding 290 °C (Shen et al., 2013). Xu and Fu (2015) demonstrated that the inclusion of abrasion-resistant agents and lubricants in PPA formulations further improves wear resistance and self-lubricating behavior, critical for moving components under load. More recently, studies on hybrid PPA matrices combining PA66 with poly(hexamethylene isophthalamide-co-terephthalamide) have shown optimized crystallization behavior and uniform fiber orientation, leading to improved surface quality and moldability (E-polymers, 2023). These properties make glass-fiber-reinforced PPA a key material for lightweight, heat-stable components in advanced manufacturing sectors.

Applications and Advantages

Glass-fiber-filled PPA is used extensively in automotive, electrical, and industrial applications where high mechanical strength and dimensional accuracy are critical. Common components include fuel system connectors, thermostat housings, electronic housings, and structural brackets. Its low moisture uptake ensures consistent mechanical performance in humid environments, while its chemical resistance provides longevity in contact with fuels, lubricants, and coolants. In electronics, PPA composites are used for connectors and insulators due to their dielectric stability and solder reflow resistance. The material’s processability—compatible with injection molding and extrusion—allows for precise and repeatable part fabrication, even in complex geometries.
