Vanadium (V) - Single Crystal & Wire - Material Information

Vanadium (V) is a transition metal known for its strength, corrosion resistance, and ability to form stable alloys. Often used as a hardening agent in steels and titanium alloys, vanadium contributes to lightweight structures, improved fatigue strength, and exceptional resistance to wear and oxidation.

Material Overview

Vanadium has a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal structure and a density of 6.11 g/cm³. Its melting point is 1910 °C, and it exhibits a high strength-to-weight ratio, with yield strengths typically exceeding 400 MPa in pure form. Vanadium naturally forms a thin, adherent oxide layer (V?O?) that enhances corrosion resistance in air and aqueous environments. It has excellent compatibility with other refractory metals, allowing for alloy systems with enhanced toughness and high-temperature performance. Vanadium’s electronic configuration (3d³4s²) contributes to its stability and facilitates alloying with elements such as chromium, titanium, and molybdenum.

Applications and Advantages

Vanadium is a key element in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels used in pipelines, automotive components, and construction. When combined with nitrogen or carbon, it forms fine precipitates (VN, VC) that strengthen steels through precipitation hardening. In aerospace applications, titanium–vanadium alloys are valued for their light weight and high tensile strength. Vanadium is also employed in the energy sector — notably in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), which provide scalable energy storage for renewable systems. Its high corrosion resistance and stability make it ideal for use in chemical reactors and heat exchangers operating under reducing conditions.
